Bigger updates=longer fun with Runescape ?
Let me get this straight here.
Jagex recently announced in their behind the scenes that for 4 week months, 2 updates will occur;one large and one small. And for the 5 week months, 3 updates, 1 big and 2 small, will be released. This seems to get rid of the usual(but not always) weekly update.
However, from what I understand, the trade-off of this is that the content released during the months will be larger than usual, with a smaller update released no more than 2 weeks after the large update. (Some player think I agree with his second point entirely. I'm one of such people that is disappointed due to not caring about PvP.
The more updates there are, the more likely it is for one to appeal to people. With only one major update a month, it makes people disappointed with the entire month if they don't like said big update. I will obviously not quit, but I'm not too happy about this either. )
My question to you is this though: Is this trade off worth it?
Personally, in my opinion, I don't think this trade off will work, because for one, I am already struggling to try and play this game, because I've accomplished all of my important goals within RuneScape, and anything else I want to do is too hard, or not worth it.
Second, not all big updates will satisfy players. Yes, I understand that not every player can be satisfied within the game, but just imagine if a big update was released that didn't satisfy you at all, and only to realize that 1, or 2 more, smaller updates would come out? I feel disappointed in Jagex because of this. I mean, seriously, what happened to the update system in the past? I thought players were complaining on how slow Jagex releases updates, not on how BIG they were. If that is the case, then I have been severely mistaken.
I don't know what's happened to this game in the 2 years I've played it. Overall, the game was going great when I started, then after a few months, it started going downhill instead of uphill, and now it has come to this.
I'm not saying I'm quitting, but I'm just wondering if the reason why this game is not so good anymore is due to the fact that Andrew & Paul Gower are not supervising the game closely as they used to in the past. If Paul & Andrew Gower supervised RuneScape more closely, then perhaps the game would improve overall?

But however , Jagex company said, let's be realistic. Even for the mad and evil geniuses locked deep within the dungeons of Jagex Castle it will be impossible, in the long run, to come up with half a dozen quality updates every month. Eventually it would degenerate to either fewer updates or low-quality updates.
As long as they're dedicated to making regular updates, I'd rather give them time to think over each and every one than supply us with cartloads of disappointments.
Admittedly, not every update is for everyone. I, personally, while a very versatile player who's tried her hand in almost everything the game has to offer, do not like every aspect and every feature of the game. not in the past, not now, and not in the future.
The true asset of Runescape is that it offers _something_ for everybody. It does not, and cannot, offer everything for everybody, seeing that there's such enormous variety within the player stock.
It's up to us to make the best out of the something that appeals to us. It's not like this game is supposed to take up all our free time - no, I play as long as I feel like I'm having fun and then go do something else. Runescape is one hobby among others, not life itself.

But let us read some other ideas from some runescape players.
Alex: I am definitely looking forward to it, if all of the updates are going to be as big and fun as the ones they have mentioned.
For example- 2 quests come out in consecutive weeks, and each one takes an hour (before the update). So, I had 2 hours of fun, and maybe another hour or so with some new unlocked areas/monsters/items etc.
And now, you get a new minigame which will last me much more than the 3 hours of fun I would have gotten from the quests. Just the Great Orb Project, which some people deemed a failure, has lasted me at the very least 10 hours of play and fun, with some great rewards to boot.
I really do prefer quality over quantity, but it's really just my opinion. Take it for what it's worth.

But some guy also think Jagex sold runescape to some company, but they still make updates. the other company most likely has some say-so in what's done. But I think it's impossible. Because never get news that Jagex sold runesape from Jagex.

Some other guy completely and utterly agree with Me. Ever since a few months before the release of God Wars, when Runescape was undergoing major graphical "updates" (or what any other rational person would call tweaks), I've notice large gaps between updates.
If anyone else remember, the updates back then WAS quality and alot more frequent. Then 1 update to the game a month leading up to the release of God Wars. I even remember a good 5 week period when there was literally no new content added to the game.
Don't get me wrong, God Wars was a fantastic update (not for me, but overall it was. I personally can't stand the place) but I would've much prefer something else to do in that time then just looking at new rats and spiders.
Keep the big updates, but for the love of Bob put out multiple updates per the less frequent updates. Those hidden shadow sword and ghost robes mini-quests were perfect. The Summers End portal finding also were great.
And heaven forbid we get another quest like All Fired Up. Seriously, it was 4 dialogs and a bank trip, Tears of Guthix was longer and had a cut scene! (stops self before I start ranting >.<
anyone....yeah, less updates = bad; more updates pertaining to everyone = more happier peoples
I agree with his second point entirely. I'm one of such people that is disappointed due to not caring about PvP.

I will obviously not quit, but I'm not too happy about this either.
But Bicyclecat thinks, I am glad that Jagex has decided to make better updates over more updates, especially since that many of the updates that were released each week had something wrong with each of them at first. I was getting tired of "rushed" updates that were glitched, so Jagex's new update plan sounds fine to me.
Oh, and it's posts like the one I quoted under this sentence that make me wonder about the average intelligence of the player population.
Paul Gower's standpoint is I don't think that many people have complained about us not updating quick enough. I know very few people who think that they should be getting MORE than 1 update a week.
What I have frequently seen complaints about is that we've not been bringing out specific updates quick enough. - and often they are updates which do require a lot of work.
Either because they require a lot of content to be developed, or because they are the ones which will have a big impact on the overall game and therefore have the potential to cause a lot of problems.
They'll complain that we've bought out certain smaller updates ahead of the more work intensive updates they were hoping for.
Many a time have I seen statements like "I didn't want another medium length quest, we've not had a new skill in ages"
So indirectly I've seen many many people asking for bigger updates.
It does also allow us to do certain updates we'd wanted to do for a while, but just didn't have time for while trying to maintain weekly updates.
I remember in the old days we just used to develop projects to the size we felt like at the time and release them when we were done, - which led to an average time between updates of about 3 weeks. We had a lot less staff back then too - so most of those I'd have classified as small, but it did mean we got to do certain bigger things when we felt the need.
We have actually in the past run a poll asking players about update sizes and the vote for having updates less but bigger updates won.
We will keep an eye on things to see how well the new update pattern works out. Though bear in the mind that with the amount of time it takes to develop updates that there is not much maneuvering space for changing our plans in the short term.
Even players satisfy with the update or not. But the update is doing every day. I think making update is good for runescape, just like Microsoft makes update too. |
